Heater Core 2001 Chev.

I"m pretty sure the heater core in my truck has has a leak, although I can"t really see it. I can smell coolant whenever the A/C is running.
My question is, how hard is it to replace the heater core? Is it one of those jobs where you end up standing on your head inside the cab, or is it fairly easy to change out?
Also, any ideas on what the part costs these days?

Ouch !! Book time,,5.6 hours , core list $131.00
Ihave not looked yet , but may have to evac a/c system too . I can get more detailed R&r info in the morning for you

You'd best get a manual for that exact vehicle. Heater cores vary from a half hour for some early '80's full size GM cars to 8 or 10 hours for others. When I was with Ford, we had one car in the shop that we had to remove the entire instrument panel from the firewall back just to access the core. I forget what model it was.

So--it depends on the individual vehicle. In the interest of preserving your sanity, it might be money well spent to pay someone else to do it. I did one on a Buick Century I once owned. The book showed 2.8 hours and it took me at least 5. I told my wife if I was ever faced with that operation again, I'd gladly pay someone else 2.8 to do it.

Goose,

You posted: "When I was with Ford, we had one car in the shop that we had to remove the entire instrument panel from the firewall back just to access the core. I forget what model it was."

You have just posted the heater core replacement instructions for a 2001 full-size Chevy pickup.

I suppose the 2002 model would be the same? That's what I have. It's something to look forward to.

The 80-90 something Ford Taurus a friend dropped off for side job of a heater core once, was over 8 hours shop time to completely remove the dash and get it back together.

I was fortunate enough to aquire the printed service data sheets and lucky enough to not break anything in the process.

I have a 1981 Mercury Cougar and the dash needs to be removed. I had a 1959 Rambler Rebel it was about a 10 minute job. Hal

I'm in the wrong office to check the flat rate manual, but it sticks in my mind there's a particular model of Mercedes that takes 24 hours. You have to dismantle half the freakin' car to get at it.
