I inhereted an old anvil and have no use for it. It's about 2,5 feet long and 8 to 10 inches wide. and probably about 200-300 pounds. Any idea what these things go for?

Generally, good old wrought iron (not cast iron) anvils bring anywhere from $1 to $3 per pound if they are in decent shape. This means no big chunks broken off and no welds or other repairs. The bigger anvils (over 200 lbs) bring the higher prices because they aren't as common. There are alot of modern cast iron anvils made in China being sold now that are pretty much junk, however, if you inherited an old anvil it is probably wrought iron with a tool steel face and very desirable, especially in a large size.A lot does depend on where you are, the condition and brand name of the anvil. Clean off the sides of the anvil and look for a name and other information to help identify it. Brand new quality anvils sell for $6 to $8 per pound.

Two years ago I paid $180 for nice one! And was lucky to find it after looking for years on end.

Just found one for a friend of mine, he gave $350 a month ago.

These both are in very good shape, and I think somewhat hard to find. I say keep the one you have, you will use it for something someday.

Surprisingly enough, They still make new anvils and they cost a pretty penny. Look them up at mcmaster-carr.com and you will see what I mean. The quality of an anvil is determined by its "bounciness", a springier anvil makes the smith's work easier by rebounding his blows. A cast iron anvil is worth its weight in cast iron because they are tiresome to use and will eventually crack. A forged steel anvil will outlast many smiths if properly mounted and protected from the weather. You will kick yourself if you get rid of it. Check the anvil for markings (stamps) which can be deciphered. I would gladly come to pick it up if close to NJ.

I sold the one and only good anvil I had about 10 years ago (if stupidity was dynamite I'd be a dead man)and have lived to regret it ever since. hang onto it even if you think you may never use it, someday you will and you'll be thankful you have it trust me

JJ - IF your anvil is an old forged anvil from around the turn of the century or earlier it will bring a LOT more than a buck a pound. If it is cast or imported from the Orient it is worth - well, not much.

I don't know where all this $1 per pound comes from, unless we are talking about something other than real "blacksmith" quality anvils. Any way go to www.EBAY.com & enter a search for anvils on completed auctions & also current offerings. If you find any good old anvils that went for $1/pound I'll eat my ....the anvil & my hat.

If you can get a picture & description of your anvil email me & I'll give you the name of a real expert who can tell you all about it.

Do keep in mind that I'm talking about anvils made by Hay-Budden, Wilkinson, Trenton, Peter Wright, & other such.

Don't sell it till you know what it is!!!

Any ideas on what my old anvil would be worth. It is marked Booth & Co, Royds Mill, Sheffd, then has 1.3.16 (I think this must be 1 March 1816) then the numbers 107. Evidence of being used and in general good condition. Also, it is 59cm long, base 30cm x 30cm and 39cm high with one horn (still rounded). I was thinking of auctioning on e-bay but maybe I should find out more before I do that. p.s. I am in Australia.
Thank you,
Carolyn

At auction here on Kauai Hawaii four old anvils sold for about $300-$400 each. Very expensive and desirable because of the high quality metal not avialable today.
