Hey guys, I have a Sears 1 1/2 ton floor jack ( Model no. 328.12002)that I purchased in 1980. This unit is made up of 1/4 inch thick steel plates and all welded heavy duty unit, not like the stamped sheet metal ones today. It has become intermittant in operation. Most times when I try to pump it up, the saddle just sinks back to the bottom. Occasionally it will hold, but I don"t trust it to use safely anymore and want to rebuild it. There are no apparent fluid leaks.
Do you have recommendations of places to get parts to rebuild? I would rather not use Sears parts as I find that they are usually 3-4 times higher than I can get parts for somewhere else. Any tips on rebuilding and refilling with fluid? Do I need any special tools?
thanks,
Mech187

Don't be surprised if you can't buy a couple new chinese replacement jacks for what you spend on parts that may or may not fix it.

Well you were right. The kit is available but it is $68. That's ridiculous....for what a few seals? I"m not even going to bother with it. Looks like it's time for a trip to Harbor Freight. Probably could buy two for that price with higher rating than 1 1/2 ton.

Take it to a jack and cylinder shop and let them look at it. Many of the older Sears jacks are Blackhawks, they will know by its looks and probably be able to help you with parts, kit, etc.

We have a hdy repair shop in town and they can get most seals o rings etc but one thing about sears sometimes their parts are only for them. check for dirt and make sure no lint off rags left on valves or check

Ahh I had the same model I think, nice jack, it went for scrap last year. Sears does not sell the little parts, just the whole pump assy, etc according to the parts list which I still had. I did not even check for availability on the parts though, since I could not get the individual seals and such.

I just bought a 3 ton at HF for $50. good so far on the HF jack.

Hello mech187
I would drain and replace the oil, I'm betting that it has not been done for a while. Take the valve assembly off and clean it as well.
While you have it apart you can inspect the parts in it. Check valves get rusty with age.
It may also just be low on fluid.
Good Luck..... .. Guido.

Sometimes the valves are not seating properly. After draining the old fluid you may wasnt to look at the valves. Should be the ball check valve and the needle valve you lowere it with. Take a bras rod and with the ball valve ( like a BB)in place put the brass rod on the ball and strike it with a hammer. The needle walve may seat in a similar way. The seat gets pitted slightly and the ball forces the seat into shape.

Guido,

I bought it new and have never done any maintenance to it at all. Just used it. Guess I will just take it apart and see what I find. thanks

Mine apparently blew the main piston seal. everything I could get at easy was fine, but no pump up with any weight on it.
