A while back there was a post here about grinders, which ones are good, bad, good value, etc.. I just finished a job at a Norboard OSB plant where we had to replace 656 feet of welded in 1/2" X 5" angle iron. Eleven guys started with 24 gringers and 250 pounds of cutting discs. Nineteen hours later 3 guys had quit, 5 pounds of discs were left, 37 burned out grinders lay in a pastboard box, and there were hardly any 4 or 5 inch grinders for sale in Valley Alabama. Only ONE of the original 24 grinders survived. A Bosh. Metabos, Milwaukees, DeWalts, Ryobis, Makitas, Kawasakis, an some I prolly forget all bit the dust. At the end of this deal, after the machine was back up an runnin, ther were only 6 functional grinders left, all Bosh. And that original Bosh that started out an survived the whole job was bought at a pawn shop for $20.00. I know what to buy now.

I've been happy with Dad's Makita that he bought about 20 years ago.

No experience with Bosch, but I've heard other stories about them saying they are a good brand.

Well, if that's the case, make a trip to Home Depot. They've got a 2pack special on bosch 4.5" grinders for $79, they're regularly $69 each.

In my opinion, there are no finer power tools than Bosch.

Hi jmixigo,

Thanks for the great information and the interesting story. Obviously you considered every option for dealing with the situation and settled on the least bad one (it's hard to use words like "good" or "best" in a situation like that.) What consideration of the situation prevented you from using gouging?

All the best, Stan

My Makita 5in depr. centre didn't expect to see so much work when I bought it 15 years ago.

Hardly any grinding but most cutting, and that mostly on overload as I use larger cutting blades. So far the notches on the handle are for a backhoe,a loader bucket w/arms, a snow blade, a cu/yard homemade cement mixer, a dirt scoop, my buddy's patio cover, 3 car trailers and the wear on the brushes is half way. It's sliced through enough steel you could have built a good size public building with it.

The other day I thought it was finished and it started to screech at me. Undid the 4 screws on the gear housing and found out all it wanted was some new grease.

Works like a top.

Go Makita, you can't go wrong.

I'm trying to imagine such a task, what required so much intensive cutting with those ?

Our ironwokers used to burn up grinders and drills, although some of them could care less about using them in a manner that was not abusive, I always had to make sure there was a line item on my estimate for tooling, definitely a cost, that and when a guy is standing there doing nothing.

A feeder conveyer 164 feet long. The chain runs on the angle (one on each side top an bottom) with a UHMW wear strip between em. Their people had let the wear strips get rubbed through an we had to replace the chain an runners. The job required a 4 day plant shut down. I'm pooped.
