The heavy duty, corrugated stuff they use for road work? I need about 8' x 8". I don't ever remember seeing it a local building supply shop or Home Depot (not that I look for it much!). Is it something a lumberyard can special order, or is there some other sort of retailer to look for?===== ===== ====
The story behind the culvert: Gosh, has to be over a dozen years ago now...pulled into my Grandfather's place (which I know own) to go fishing. It's already 80-something degrees and high humidity and it's only 9am. And 80-something Papu has a trench half-way across the driveway already dug up. So I help him finish digging up the old section of culvert that had failed. It was just something he had built from scrap pieces of metal years before. He had been planning to jerry rig up a new culvert from other scraps like old water heaters and such, but with me there and my pickup, he decided to "do it right" and we went down to the local pre-cast place. Man, a 8-1/2' long, 8" concrete pipe makes the springs sag on an S-10 :) He had a plan of how to get it out and roll it over -- all he'd tell me was, "We'll just pull up next to a tree, few ropes and a come-a-long all we need." Wish I had seen what he knew to do, but I circumvented that plan when I saw a friend pulling out of another friend's farm with the Telephone Company boom (auger) truck -- he had just dropped off some old poles from a nearby job. I waved at Dan to follow me, and the boom made very short work of unloading the pipe. Set it just uphill so we could finish preparing the trench bottom then just roll it down in. And that fixed the left half of the driveway -- the right hand side's metal was still in good shape. Spent the rest of the afternoon back filling and fixing the stone work that faced the swale that only has running water during storms. Come this spring, I noticed a small hole starting to develop in the driveway...the right side is finally giving way. Ok, maybe concrete pipe would be a bit more permanent...but I'm figuring that plastic culvert stuff will be much easier to work with!
