Where do you buy plastic culvert?

The heavy duty, corrugated stuff they use for road work? I need about 8' x 8". I don't ever remember seeing it a local building supply shop or Home Depot (not that I look for it much!). Is it something a lumberyard can special order, or is there some other sort of retailer to look for?

===== ===== ====
The story behind the culvert:

Gosh, has to be over a dozen years ago now...pulled into my Grandfather's place (which I know own) to go fishing.

It's already 80-something degrees and high humidity and it's only 9am. And 80-something Papu has a trench half-way across the driveway already dug up.

So I help him finish digging up the old section of culvert that had failed. It was just something he had built from scrap pieces of metal years before.

He had been planning to jerry rig up a new culvert from other scraps like old water heaters and such, but with me there and my pickup, he decided to "do it right" and we went down to the local pre-cast place. Man, a 8-1/2' long, 8" concrete pipe makes the springs sag on an S-10 :)

He had a plan of how to get it out and roll it over -- all he'd tell me was, "We'll just pull up next to a tree, few ropes and a come-a-long all we need."

Wish I had seen what he knew to do, but I circumvented that plan when I saw a friend pulling out of another friend's farm with the Telephone Company boom (auger) truck -- he had just dropped off some old poles from a nearby job.

I waved at Dan to follow me, and the boom made very short work of unloading the pipe. Set it just uphill so we could finish preparing the trench bottom then just roll it down in.

And that fixed the left half of the driveway -- the right hand side's metal was still in good shape. Spent the rest of the afternoon back filling and fixing the stone work that faced the swale that only has running water during storms.

Come this spring, I noticed a small hole starting to develop in the driveway...the right side is finally giving way. Ok, maybe concrete pipe would be a bit more permanent...but I'm figuring that plastic culvert stuff will be much easier to work with!

Try Target Enterprises in Thomaston. I got the pipe for my driveway there.

Menards is where I bought some. Figured all their competition would carry it too - HD, Lowes, etc. I've seen it piled up by the farm supply stores that are around - if it has the word Fleet or Farm in the name is a 66% chance it has it on the back deck in these parts.

I used to work in a plastic pipe factory and you need to find double wall plastic pipe bacause single wall the stuff that is thin like field tile will collapse under a load buried that shallow. And you need to be able to have at least 8-10" of clean dirt over pipe bacause as time goes on the rock will drill a hole thru the cheap plastic , but if it were me I would go to a contractor supply company and buy a metal pipe this will last you the rest of your life.

As Mike said, try ADS (Advanced Drainage Systems) at the link below.

We used to sell a crap load of the stuff here in North Idaho. 10' and 20' lengths plus coils in lots of different diameters.

This is a private-property culvert. A good 200-300' off the road, and it's a state highway at that.

Plastic just 'cause I figure it'll be easier to work with.

Have to laugh at the concrete companies selling plastic and metal pipe!

Don't know where you at but contact your county road dept. In my area you buy the pipe they put it in free so I would just replace the whole thing and be done with it

Home depot and lowes do NOT sell them in my area. The local concrete company sells them. (Metal; plastic; concrete)

It is not something that our parish (oops!! county) advertises but they will come out and install your culvert for free if you buy it from them. Something about they would rather do it and not have future drainage problems than let you do it yourself. You may want to give your county drainage dept. a call.

Call your local precast company. Many sell plastic and concrete. Cultec in Danbury area makes a corrugated arch.

We have a PVC plant down the road. Lots of folks use thier scraps. I can check on some for ya. Located in N. FL.

Question - why plastic? I use steel culverts for my drive. Road crew always seems to destroy the plastic ones when "pulling the ditches" around here.

Does it have to be corrugated? Around the village area here, we have heavy duty traffic, trucks and construction equip. All they are using is a heavy grade plastic or pvc water or sewer pipe. I think what helps is not digging the trench any wider than the pipe. Some dont have much more than 6" fill on top.

Matt,

You should be able to buy it at most home centers, farm stores, and lumber yards. Sometimes they're just tucked away out of sight--ask the clerks. Better yet, call ahead so that you're not just driving around blindly looking for culverts--gas is just TOO expensive!!

Good luck!

Try a web search for ADS and see if there is a dealer directory. It may not be as readily available in Ct. as in more rural states. It's easy to find in upstate NY.

I know of the places that make the tile.

Hancor
Findly Ohio
Phone 419-424-8232

Haviland Drainage
Haviland Ohio
419-622-4611

Baughman Tile
Paulding Ohio

Good luck. Remember they make it, I don't know if they will sell it to you. And I don't know how you'll get it home.
