Miller 250 twin welder humming noise

I recently purchased a Miller 250 twin ac dc welder at an auction. The machine seems to weld good on both ac and dc settings, but I have noticed that this machine makes a loud humming noised when welding. It is very noticeable on the high range settings. The only other welders i am familiar with are Lincoln buzz boxes, and larger heavier duty Millers. Since this is a smaller machine , and older, and ac dc is the noise normal. Also how much welding, at what current , before the fan should kick on , or is it supposd to run continuously?? I have only burnt about 4 electrodes, and never noticed the fan to kick on yet. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Jon,

If you took off the cover you would probably find dirt, gravel, grinding shavings or some loose metal ect: hanging on the transformer thats viberating from the magnetic field.

Some machines use a secondary sliding core inside the primary coil to control amperage that gets loose and viberates. There's plastic guides to adjust to help with this problem.

Inside the cover is high voltage so be very careful even after you unplug the power to the machine.

On some machines the cooling fan is thermostaticly controled and it takes some time for the fan to come on.

The smaller 115v machines usually have a continous running cooling fan.

I would order a service manual from Miller as then you will know what you have.

A lot of Miller's manuals can be downloaded from their website www.millerwelds.com. I have an old Miller buzz-box and you can almost guess the current setting by how loud it buzzes. Been the same for about 25 years.

I was always told transformers hum because they dont know the words.
