How may PSI can soldered joints hold up to? if running air threw it.

A well-done ordinary solder joint will handle several hundred PSI. My personal choice for air lines would be hard solder because of the vibration. Soft solder can fatigue under vibration but hard solder will not. I believe copper is now the #1 choice for air systems.

I ran 1 1/2 main copper lin for my friends body shop. He runs two 25 HP compressors at 175 PSI. Went with copper as steel piping rusts and causes problems with the air tools. The drops were done in 3/4 copper pipe. When we pressured it up, we had one 1 1/2 joint come apart at 60 PSI, missed sodering it. I will only copper pipe for air lines. If you don't think copper will take the pressure, look up the pressure rating for the copper pipe, you will be surprised, it's way up there, I believe over 1000 PSI.

It certainly does depend on the quality of the soldered joint.

A copper piping system is pretty darn tough provided the joints are well made. Actually, they aren't THAT hard to do correctly, and copper is way easier to install than iron pipe. We install many copper systems that have healthy working pressures applied to them.

By the way--I've seen 1200 PSI on 1/2" OD refrigeration copper. This was used for testing another system and was a hydro test--cold temps and temporary to boot. Held just dandy for 48 hours.

Joe, I sure learned something about copper tubing/pipe. I had no clue that it could withstand such pressure/force. I had always thought was too soft for that kind of pressure.

And you are absolutely correct, sweating a joint correctly is not hard to do. But the secret is that it is done correctly. Without knowing whether or not they were, can not guess at, or advise as to how much pressure they will withstand. Someone could've used dirty pipe (inside the fittings), then threw a bead around the outside edge, and a cold one at that. Then again, may've scuffed and cleaned everything up and be the best job in the world. Who knows? Time will tell though.

I've never tried using copper tubing for pressurized air, and wouldn't. But, the others say that it works. I can tell you this, if aren't buffed and sweated correctly, won't hold a much lower pressured water (like 60 PSI). Whatever anyone's using them for, solder has to be drawn (sucked) up into the joints, not just beaded up around the outside where is visible to the naked eye. If you didn't sweat them yourself, and/or they weren't sweated correctly, is no telling. I would imagine the type and wall thickness matter too.

Personally, pressurized air? I use steel pipe.

Same old story: If you don't do it yourself, you can't have much confidence in it. I've seen a couple of pretty bad (partially) threaded joints in my time.

I have 450# psi running through refrigeration lines all the time. I use 95/5 solder. HTH

One place i worked at had all copper piping and soldered joints, in their air-lines. We never had any problem with lines blowing out, and i was there 12 years! I think the lines were still there when the bldg. was torn down for a new school! And, that was 10 years later. Another place had steel lines, and since the steel lines had been in there since the place was built, back in the twenties, we had some rust/dirt problems, and had to have big filters on them. by: Rustyj

I installed copper air lines in my shop at work. It was approved by the health and safty inspectors with the stippulation that it be rigid copper. I tinned the joints before assembly to make sure they sucked in solder. One I didn't get right simply leaked, it didn't explode or anyting dramatic like that. Bled the system and redid that joint and it has worked fine for ten years at 125psi. Slope you lines and install drains to minimize water in the tools etc. I also installed the tees for the air lines with the tee up also to minimize water.
