Poulan saws: any good?

At Princess Auto they have this bin of factory rebuilt engines (all but bar and chain) for Poulan saws.

The model numbers run around 2500 and up to 2560 or so, with various feral names on the decals. At $99 CDN they're cheap, but would one be a bargain?

I have a Craftsman 2.3/16" Powersharp Chainsaw that I bought from Sears in the 70s. The US Pat. # 0n the Fan flywheel is 3828426 which is a 1974 pattern #. The Model # tag on the chainsaw came of and my manuals are missing. I am trying to purchase service and a parts manual, but all I can give you is some of the parts numbers on the saw. The cylinder shield is 11185. Carberetor cover with the choke adjustment is 11187. The housing fan is 28292-3. The chain Drive Housing with the power sharp assemble is 28308. I have tried going to Sears parts but they require a model number which I don't have. The saw is in good condition, but I would like to either download or purchase the manuals.

I got one a few weeks ago from princess auto in dartmouth NS it would not run correctly neede carb adjusted so I took it back they do have a warranty and I got a 220 poulan pro saw it works fine for limbing at 40 cc's it has pretty good power I use a stihl 290 for bigger wood. If you get a good one at Princess auto you won't regret it try for the anti vibe 220 and up maybe even a 260 or 295 I would stay away from the all green ones the pro line has anti vibe on it.

Have had a 2800 model with 20" bar for 12 yr. now. works good. had to replace the fuel hose, dried and rotten but thats all. They tend to be a little heavy, but not cheaply built. If you use synthetic oil (I swear by Amsoil 2 stroke oil) and keep it clean, they run a very long time.

I have this Poulan 2800 2.8 cu. in model chainsaw also-but don't have the manual. Is this a 40:1 gas to oil ratio? Thanks!

Had a Poulan 4000 model for several years. Sweet running and fast cutting saw. Most any chainsaw will cut well IF you have a real sharp cutting sawchain on the bar. My Poulan would make sawdust chips as big your finger nail any throw the chips 10 feet pass the saw operator. Cut through wood like a knife in butter.

Had a poulan 16" saw that I bought in 1980,great little saw.But it met a untimely death a couple of years ago by jumping in front of my bush hog.When Central Tractor went out of business I bought a poulan 16" to replace it.Its not half the saw the old one was.Sold it and got a Stihl.

I have a 20" Poulan pro that I bought 4 years ago and am overall pretty happy with it. I went with that saw because they sales guy told me that the Husky was now made by them too. The bore is chrome plated on the pro model and it will last longer than standard models. For heavier duty I would be looking at a larger husky or stihl. It all depends on what you will use it for.

The rebuilts need to be REALLY cheap for me to buy them as there is quite a bit of retail competition and you can get a new one for only a little but more. That said however, it"s all about what you will use it for and how much you want to spend. I have several power tools that I have bought as rebuilds and I have had very good luck with them.

Depending on what you plan on doing with this saw will depend on if this is a good deal. Around here, you can buy new saws for around 125.00USD. They are not a bad saw, but they are a throw away saw. They do vibrate a lot compared to the pro saws you can buy, so that is one thing you have to live with. It has a primer on it and we get a lot of saws in 2-3 years old with primer broke and fuel lines rotted off. A couple weeks ago I had an old Stihl saw and the guy I was cutting with had 2 Poulans. My old Stihl did 90% of the cutting, he could not keep any of two saws running, constantly had to fiddle with carb, tightening chain, etc. so if you are doing light occasional cutting, htis saw will proabably do what you want, but if you are doing any serious cutting, go buy a good saw.

I got a little 14" for light duty work new for a C-note five years ago. I use it several times a year and I got no complaints at all. The size is a limiting factor though, as I do need a bigger unit.

Factory rebuilt ? My neighbor bought two of those saws burnt them up within the first tank of gas ? Claims he followed the directions. He returned them back where he bought them,Lowes or somewhere like that. So that must be where they get them to rebuild them.He then bought a higher dollar Cub Cadet saw from TSC don't know who actually makes it,but it is still running.

I would reccommend a Stihl brand saw.

I have a 16" Poulan - Starts easy and been dependable so far(its 4yrs old). I only use it for light work. It's a lightweight saw and wouldn't last long at the rigors of daily logging and wood cutting. But for no more than I use it, I like it. I paid $122.00 for it at the local Wal- mart. Bob

I am told that Poulan makes the smaller Husky's but am not positive about that--just heard that from someone local. I first used Poulan saws back in '69--after Hurricane Camille. Back then they were a bright lime green color and I remember they were a good saw. They used to be made in Shreveport, LA, but don't know where they're made now. Back to your question, I think just about all the lightweight saws are not too great on durability--with a very thin liner surface over the aluminum bore. For light work, you'd probably be OK, but if you're cutting like we do, I'd go for something a little more durable.
Whenever I see remanufactured chain saws for sale, I always have visions of some city boy putting straight gas in the tank and running it 'til it seizes up and then returns the saw as defective. The factory gets them back and does whatever they can do to resell them as "remanufactured". Why else would the discount places have truckloads of these saws for sale?

I used to work for a Poulan supplier. You are right some small Huskies and Jonsereds are the same as Poulans. Same parent company Electrolux. And most still made in Shreveport.

All these factory "remanufactured saw are a result of the Walmart and others no questions asked return policies. Poulin and others get bacl alot of saws. Might have been used for a small cleanup job and returned for full credit. poulan has to do something with them so they clean them up test em and resell them.

A few years ago we bought one for our son at Sears (Craftsman) made by Poulan for $129 USD. It came with an extra chain and some other accesories and a nice case. I have used it some and it seems like a nice saw for the money. I have one that I bought in 1972 with a Jonsreud name on it and its still going strong. I don't recognize the models so they may be bigger saws than I am talking about.

Have a S25DA 14in. that was given to me about 20yrs. ago. I have used it off and on. It quit on me the other day. No spark. Did these saws originally have points and condensor. This one has electronic ignition, but there are indications that it might have had points originally.
