I bought a Sthil 028AV cahinsaw about a zillion years ago. I have used it off and on since new, the longest average period of inactivity being 6 or 7 months. About the middle of april this year I dug it out to do some work. I topped up the fuel and bar oil. Like always it fired on the 2nd or 3rd pull. I warmed it up a moment or two and began to cut. The saw did the job perfectly until running out of fuel. I refilled it and went back to work. About halfway through the second tank it just seemed to run out of power and eventually died. I checked the fuel level, it was ok. Even though I had cleaned the air filter earlier I checked it, still clean.
I went ahead and started it back up and it started and ran normally. I revved it up and went back to cutting and as soon as I applied a load to it it lost power and then died again.
I cleaned the fuel filter (what a pain to get out) & checked the tank vent. I tried adjusting the high speed needle and it didn't help. I have even drained the fuel and replaced with fresh fuel. The saw will start and idle just fine, it just won't pull a load.
So I am guessing that there must be a fuel pump of sorts on this saw and it is failing. Am I right? If so does anyone have a parts diagram or scan from a service manual showing the details?
Thanks in advance for the help.

What Bill said - Had similar problem w/ 029 last month. After about 20 replies on this board, the fuel line was the only correct one. They're around $7.00.

I have one of these and it did the same thing. Ended up replacing the ignition system--seem these were built just as they were switching to the electronic version.

It could be a hole in the fuel line. It will work until it sucks in air. I have had this happen with my Stihl.

Hi Bob, you`re supposed to rebuild the carb about every half zillion years or so, LOL. There is a fuel pump of sorts and its in the carb. Checked what`s called the impulse line that transfers engine vacuum from the crankcase to this diaphragm which pumps gas into the carb. Now is a good time to check your fuel hose for cracks and collapse. Also carefully disassemble the carb noting the postions of all components, then blast all the orifices with carb cleaner and compressed air. Put a new carb kit in, adjust your screws out 1 turn from lightly seated, and fire it up. Now fine tune the carb. Oh yeah, don`t forget fresh gas. Don`t forget to check for a nice blue spark also. If it still doesn`t run with power after ruling out these other potential problems, pull the muffler and look through the cylinder exhaust port for scoring of the piston or stuck rings.

It may be time for a new spark plug. The first thing that one should do if it does not run right is put in a new plug. Lots of plugs will kind of run. Good one will run. I was told a long time a go first fuel filter, then spark plug, last thing to mess with is the carb.

good general advice. ALWAYS try a new plug first, no matter what the symtoms are. Thats how important a good plug is. It can mimic any disorder. Now with new plug & it still messes up, its one of 3 things; fire(electrical system) fuel or blocked muffler. Probably not muffler but its simple to remove muffler & try to run it. If it runs ok, muffler is good. Muffler problems are more common on weedeaters altho screens occasionally clog up on saws.
