Figure the internal area of the tank then divide by 231. ( 231 cu. in. = 1 US gal. ) Will work for figuring the gallons in any container. Volume of a sphere = cube of the diameter x .5236 Volume of a cylinder = square of the diameter x length x .7854.

I used to sell propane at my store and I remember there being 4.3 gallons in a 20# bottle

The last time I filled my 20lb opd tanks, I got just over 4 gallons in each.

The question does not state actual capacity or rated capacity of propane. Propane is 4.24 pounds per gallon. The 20 lb rating leaves 20% of the tank empty to allow for the propane to expand when it gets warm. The tank will have water capacity (WC?) in pounds stamped on it, and I think that is 8.33 pounds per gallon.

I think most propane tanks have codes stamped in the guard that is around the valve. There should be a "W" with a number following. The number indicates the weight of water the tank holds. Seems like 8.5 lbs/ gallon of water, not sure. Then a 5 gallon tank would have "W42.5" on the guard. I can't find the article right now , but I believe it was in 'Trailer Life' magazine last year, maybe January or February discussing tanks becoming obsolete due to the old style valve. April 2002 was the deadline for filling the old tanks.

8lbs for a gallon of water, my grandmother taught me; "A quart is a pound the world around".

Actually, the old addage is: "A pint's a pound, the world around". Old time bakers figured a pint of flour or sugar weighed pretty close to a pound.

Yes Willie , I'll back you on that one. When talking propane tanks , 20 pounds does equal 5 gallons.

I thought it would be a 7 gallon tank? Or is a 7-1/2 gallons = 30 #? Been a long time since I filled bottles.
