Thinking about making some concrete blocks out of 55 gal drum to put extra weight on my disc and I was wanting to know how much a 55 gal drum filled with concrete would weigh. Thanks

I saw a shop hint in a farm magazine for adding weight to a disk or other impliments, and maybe even a tractor. Find a weight lifting bar and weights that's being scrapped or at a yard sale. Cut the bar into convenient lengths, usually about 12" and weld one upright on each side of the disk frame for balance. Then just add the weights equally on each verticle shaft till you get the desired total amount.
Weights come in sizes from around 2lbs to 50lbs, so one could add from 4 to 500-600lbs. For more weight, add more verticle shafts in the center of the frame. No water or hoses, no rusty drums, no crane to lift blocks of concrete, and minor expense. On and off in a few minutes, field or shop.

I have a 10 ft. disc with the deep cone blades behind a 80 hp JD and I was thinking about putting some angle iron down the middle and set a drum or two of concrete on it and have it where they can be taken off easy when not needed and for transport or would it be better to put half of a drum on each side or down the middle? Thanks

I put 2 big blocks of concrete on my 7 foot disc so it would get in the soil better. I was pulling it with a 60 horse tractor and it started right off breaking some bolts. I took it to the shop and repaired and then it bends the frame and then discs start breaking in half. In other words, the lesson here is I need a bigger disc rather than making a small one heavy. Also running a ripper through first really helps the disc get in the soil.

I have a 55 gal drum full of concrete, I would say it will kill your disc.. maybe your tractor would't pull it if it's a little tractor? I dont know what size disc or tractor you are using. I would say a 55 gal drum full of water would do fine if you have big tractor, two would be good.

Here is a page that I've found useful. The units are metric, but click on one to convert it to US customary units.

I don't know how much weight your looking for, but out here, we put two or four 55 gallon drums on our disc, then add water to get the weight we need. It's also adjustable. I welded some angle iron across my disc to act as a cradle, then strapped the drum down. I use two drums plum full for my first few passes then lighten it up after that.

Depending on your mixtures and preferences a cubic foot of concrete weighs from 68# to 200#. The most common mixture is concrete/gravel; it weighs ~150# per cubic foot.

Hi Tom,

Using Ray's 150#/cft about 3100lbs

55gal Drum 30"diax51" check my numbers here!

15"x15"=225x3.1416=706.86x51"=36050ci/1728(ci in a cft)=20.86cftx150#=3129lbs

ci= cubic inchs
cft= cubic foot
pi=3.1416

Based on imperial measure,a drum is 45 imperial gallons(205litres).A cubic foot by volume is 6.25 gallons,therefore a 45 (55us)gallon drum would be 7.2 cu.ft @150 lbs per cu.ft which equ als 1080 lbs.A cubic yard @150 lbs per ft is 4050lbs-a cubic metre is approx.5400lbs.

7.48 gallons per cubic foot so there are 7.35 cubic feet in 55 gallons giving a weight of 1102 pounds if using a weight of 150 pounds per cubic foot.

Don't feel bad but it was your drum demensions that were off. 55 gallon drums are just under 24" in diameter and are under 4' in length. They are still heavy.

Thanks for trying to sugar coat it but my math was wrong!

55galx231ci(ci in a gallon) 12,705ci/1728=7.35cft x 150#= 1102lbs

There was a known starting point which I failed to consider.
