Oxy-Acetylene tank sizes

Can anybody explain the different tank sizes to me? I think that the last time I exchanged my empty tanks for full ones, the new oxygen tank is physically smaller. What are the common hobby use sizes?
Thanks,
Bill

Is there an age limit on these tanks like there is on propane? I have a couple of real old tanks that I'm embarased to take and have filled.

And here are the standard acetylene cylinder sizes:

WTL - 390 FT3 - 12.5" outside diameter - 44-3/8" tall
WK - 304 FT3 - 12-7/8" outside diameter - 42" tall
WSL - 130 FT3 - 8.5" outside diameter - 33.5" tall
WS - 130 FT3 - 8.5" outside diameter - 35.5" tall
WC - 111 FT3 - 8.5" outside diameter - 37.5" tall
WQ - 60 FT3 - 7-5/8" outside diameter - 24-1/4" tall
B - 40 FT3 - 6-1/4" outside diameter - 23" tall
MC - 10 FT3 - 4" outside diameter - 14" tall

Again, the height includes the cylinder cap.

The R oxy and MC acet are common sizes for the portable torch sets.

The B Acet is common in the plumbing trades for air/acet soldering of copper joints.

If you do a lot of cutting, you want a larger oxy cyl. I haven't measured mine but I think they are the WS acet and K oxy.

Could you list the common sizes for C and C25 tanks?

Also, is there a list of nominal pressures when full?

Hi Don,

I don't have any listing of a C or C25 cylinder size designation. Are you talking about Carbon Dioxide and 75/25 Argon/Carbon Dioxide mix commonly used in MIG welding? That would be a gas designation rather than a cylinder size designation. These gases would both be in the high pressure cylinder category. They would commonly be supplied in T size high pressure cylinders, as is oxygen. That would be 9-1/4" O.D. x 60" high. This info is from an old (early '80s) Linde (Union Carbide) catalog. Other suppliers may provide these gases in any of the cylinder sizes listed under my post on oxygen cylinders. The cylinder of 75/25 that I have is a T, however the growth of relatively small MIG welders in recent years may have led to supply of these gases in cylinders smaller than the T. Check with a local supplier for availability.

The standard full pressure for any of the high pressure gases in a T size cylinder is 2,640 psig. For all the other HP cylinder sizes, the full pressure is 2,200 psig for any gas...with the exception of hydrogen and hydrogen mixtures which is 2,000 psig. These pressures are at a temperature of 70 deg F. That pressure will increase over 70 deg and decrease under 70 deg for the same quantity of contents.

By contrast, all the acetylene cylinders have a full pressure of 250 psig, also at 70 deg F.

Hope this answers your question,
Rod

Hi Bill,

Here are the standard oxygen cylinder sizes:

T - 330 FT3 - 9.25" outside diameter - 60" tall
K or KL - 244 FT3 - 9.00" outside diameter - 56" tall
LK - 244 FT3 - 8-15/16" outside diameter - 56" tall
D - 122 FT3 - 7.5" outside diameter - 48" tall
E or Y - 122 FT3 - 7.0" outside diameter - 48" tall
Q - 80 FT3 - 7.125" outside diameter - 35" tall
XL - 70 FT3 - 6" outside diameter - 41" tall
S - 150 FT3 - 7-3/8" outside diameter - 51" tall
R - 20 FT3 - 5-3/16" outside diameter - 19" tall

The height includes the cylinder cap

Hi Bill,

Something else to watch for at current gas prices is you get a full bottle. I just got screwd again in 10yrs on oxygen.

My gas supplier in 1990 ask my opinion of how he was setting up his cylinder transfer system. What he was doing is buying bulk HE, Co2 and AR and mixing his own welding gas cheaper than his wholesaler could supply it. He then ran the bulk tanks into a manifold to fill his empty cylinders either as a mixed gas or straight gas. His supplier caught on and made him stop or the supplier would chop off his gas supply.

We being the dummy I am, I forgot all about him filling his own cylinders, so Friday I go get a cylinder of O2. His wife does the books and gave me a "special" price of $25 for a 244cft cyl of O2.

I didn't think anything about it until I got home and hooked up the cyl to the gauge. It showed 1700psi and a normal full cyl is 2100 to 2200psi. So what he is doing is drawing off of several full cylinders to make one free profit cylinder at 1700psi. That increases his over all gas profit by 22% with a free cylinder every 4 cylinders.

Next time it's time to find a new gas supplier!

I have a high pressure gauge attached to a stem and nut from a regulator that I take with me to the depo and check each tank before I load it to avoid having to return it. Have one for Oxy and one for Acetylene. Saved me an extra trip more than once.

one thing to consider is that when filled ambieant temp has a lot to do with how much they can put in a cylinder safely they dont fill to max press to allow for expansion IE if you fill one cyl at 80 deg and one at 30 deg and the temp gets 100 deg (if they were both filled to same press the one filled at 30 becomes dangerous ) just my .02 worth mike

Mike, that's a good point. If you consider a cylinder at 2200 psig at 80 deg F, that same cylinder would read 1995 psig if the temperature were to drop to 30 deg F. That's assuming the contents act as a perfect gas and none is withdrawn or added.

yea nothing is perfect so that may or may not be all of it but i know my bottles vary from summer to winter and at times i can go through a couple bottles a week i dont get to excited unless they get em way low then i'll complain and when i do they give me another one was told by distributor that i deal with that if i get one thats low bring it back and they will exchange said it must have bad valve or something mike

Hi Mike & Rod,

Yes that is true but our average tempature is about 70*f this time of the year. I could also be hyper sensitive to my suppliers product as I've seen his refilling manifold. But the gauge don't lie :)

My B-I-L works for NCG in Denver and every winter they get near full Acetylene cylinders in as empty cyl. as the cold causes a near empty pressure drop in winter.

I bought a cylinder at a sale that was used for one of those fire extingishing set ups under a grill at a big restraunt. It is at least partially charged. What is in it, If I would change the valve and pay for a hydro test can it be used for CO2 or Cargon?

Hi Ted,

I doubt if you could get a gas supplier to refill the cyl. If they do FE they might do an exchange with you for a fee.
