Looking To Restore

I'm wanting to restore a hit and miss engine but know little of their history in regards to the most popular, availability of parts, etc. I've ordered The Complete Guide to Stationary Gas Engines
by Mark Meincke in hope of getting smarter. Can someone make some recommendations on manufacturer and models, and a price range for non-running and running engines. I live near St. Louis. Thanks.

If you are concerned about parts availability, you might go to the site linked below, and see which engines they have good parts availability for, then search for one of those engines to restore

Might check the ads and Gas Engine Magazine for other suppliers, as well.

You know if you decide on restoring a more rare/unusual engine you will pretty much have to make missing parts, or have them made for you.
Hit N Miss

For your first hit and miss governed engine I would recommend a Hercules built engine. They made engines for several companies with different trade names like
Economy(Sears and Roebuck), Jeager, and Arco. Lots of parts available and they can be bought for $200-500. Also a common mistake novices make when purchasing
there first engine is assume all engines with two flywheels are "hit and miss". There are lots of engines out there that are throttle governed instead.
International type M engines and most Fairbanks Morse engines are a couple examples.
