Kohler K7-1

Hello gang....
I hope this is the right forum to post to on this. Here goes:
I have recently acquired a 1949 Kohler 2HP engine that needs some love. Been years since it ran.
I have experience in B&S, Clinton, Wisconsin, Economy, LeRoi, Hercules, Tecumseh, but I have never worked on an old Kohler. Here's my problem:
I tore the engine down to clean it and assess its condition (which is very good) and completed some of the usual tasks there were needed but then I noticed that there's nothing on the camshaft and crank to align the valve timing. The only thing I found was a small dot or punch mark on the cam gear, but I can't find anything on the crank. I'm up the river without a paddle now.
Have any of you ever done one of these engines and if so, do you have any ideas as to how I can time this thing properly? Is there some secret way of doing it? Maybe I'm missing a small mark on the crank?
Please.....if anyone out there has a clue, I'd sure appreciate it. This is the one thing preventing me from putting this old boy back together, and even if I knew how to time it, I have no idea how to install it properly so things line up. It's a complicated old boy. It appears to have been a pump given that there's a throttle on it. Most generators I've seen don't have this as they need to operate at a given speed all the time. But I could be wrong.
Engine: Kohler, K7-1
Type: 3508B
Name on unit: Mall Tool Co.
Serial: 727730
Type: 37140GD
Thanks much to those who reach out. I hate to toss this old guy. It's a nice little engine.
