Information on McCormick Engine

I have my grandfather's McCormick engine which I have never heard run. The information on the engine says that it is a 1 1/2 HP Speed 500 with serial number W68623. Is this a "E" or does the Speed 500 mean it is something else? I have looked online and cannot find an operators manual, parts book or any other information about the engine. Is there anyone in NW Wisconsin that I could contact? Thanks in advance, Lee

500 is probably rpm speed. Can you post a picture?

I have an engine that looks to be the same as yours. Mine is a Model LA. It is a 1 1/2 HP to 2 1/2HP engine. It is 1 1/2 HP at the slow speed and 2 1/2 at high speed. You can change the speed from one to the other with the handle behind the flywheel. Mine has a serial number of LA 15740 which makes it a 1936 model. My engine spent most of it's working life running a vacuum pump for milking cows.

I rechecked the plate on the engine and it shows the serial number as: No.A, and then in a box, W68623. Do you information on how to determine the year of manufacture and the source of a owner's manual and parts book. Sorry for the poor quality of the picture, but too much stuff in the shop for winter storage. Thanks for the help, Lee

The picture of engine you posted looks very much like a drawing of a Type M Engine that Jim Becker used as a reference in his article in the March-April 2005 Issue of Red Power Magazine. He posts regularly on farmallcub.com. They have a section for Other Tractors and machinery. If you want to take the time to post the question over there, he may see it and respond.

You have a 1928 !-1/2 Horse Power engine. It is a gas burner. Some were also built as kerosene burner. There serial numbers are different.

I've got an LB just like that. Next on the bench to fix the throttle/governor linkage. Sucker ran wild on me and threw the starting handle through the soffit of the shop and made a 1/2" dent in a truss ! Bent the solid pin 90 degrees ! Ran smooth as silk tho. I was leaning over the flywheel about 10 seconds before the incident.
