B S suction tube

For the old briggs motors that had the suction tube in the tank and the small copper line leading up to the carb., is it necessary to have a check valve in the tank?
Mine is toast.

I'm not sure if this will help you but what I did on an old 1936 B & S is to make a new line with a trap like a drain trap in it. 'this keeps gas or air from draining back to the tank. This old engine starts and runs good with this set up . Good Luck.
