Update on JD 1 1/2 Engine

I have tried about everything that could be tried. Checked and checked. Tonight I hooked a battery and coil to it and it started. Slipped the coil wire off and the mag wire on and it continues to run. BUT it will not start on the mag. I have cleaned the brush on the left side of the mag and cleaned the surface it runs on. So I assume it is not generating enough current at cranking speed. Any suggestions as to what could be wrong with the mag?

Okay remove the mag from the engine. Try resetting the mag and do not use the indentions as listed in the J.D. Manual. Hook up a volt meyer and spin the mag gear it does not have to spin fast. Monitor the voltage to see where the most voltage is produced. Mark that spot and tooth and set the mag back on the hottest spark spot when the spark mark is paralle to the exhaust rod. Try to start the engine then. If you get the hot voltage to spark when the ignitor opens it should run better then it does when timing the generator per J.D. Instructions. I have set up 4 engines this way when they were hard to start. Watch it as if fires you better be ready as it will surprise you when it fires. Clean the carbons and the rings they ride on with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Clean until you get no film showing on the q-tip. You can clean the spring also. This also does wanders. I hope this is the easier fix.
