can three and half HP open crank be dated by serial number

I have been lucky to find an Amanco 3 and 1/2 open crank engine and I am sure someone will tell me if it can be dated by serial number. it has not been converted to high tension but it is stuck from standing for many years .. how should I go about freeing a horizontal engine also I would like to know it's weight as I intend to mount it on a home made chasis and I need to know what capacity suspension units I will need

Unfortunately there is not any clear and concise year of manufacture on the later Associated engines. And being that you said that it is a 3 1/2 hp version, it would be a later engine. It is just a re-rated 3hp engine. The approximate age would be in the mid to late 20's. That is a size not seen very often. Kind of a betweener for a size. There are quite a few 6hp engines out there and then the 2 1/2 hp and down for size. Good luck and have fun with it.
