hit miss timing

John Deere 1.5hp model E ,1925 year ....crankshaft gear has several different timing marks ...how do I time cam gear to crank with no marks ? cam gear with 2 marks is correct....thanks for any help

HOPEFULLY, one of the marks on the crankshaft gear is correct.

Try timing it to the first mark, then slowly crank it and see where the "ignitor trip" and "exhaust" marks on the flywheel are when those events occur compared to where they are supposed to be.

If wrong, try the other mark and repeat.

none of the marks are right [6] ....moved one tooth at a time until crank is TDC when igniter goes off & EX valve moves correct to crank ....will have to hope for the best

checked that & gear on correct but sometime in the past someone has put punch marks all over it .....have evan tried a old timey way called "tramming" ....been working on all kinds of engines for over 50yrs. & this simple 1cyl. can't be that hard to time manually without marks ...LOL

Well, since exhaust valve timing and igniter trip timing are correct and it has an "automatic" intake valve all bases hsould be covered, and all should be well.

worked out good Bob cranked on the 2nd or 3rd turn...have a video of it running ....now is for sale ....thanks again

I have always taken the engine thru the motion when timing them without marks. Put the piston on TDC and the exhaust valve should have just closed. Now it's ready for the intake stroke. Turn the crankshaft slowly and just eyeball the movement. Turn it a few revolutions and make minor adjustments.
