Cut Off Saw Speed

I am rebuilding an old cut off saw with a thirty inch blade.I have it running with a four inch endless flat belt. What is the recommended speed of such a set up?It is now turning twelve hundred and that seems TOO fast .Thank you for any and all info.GP

I found a suggested range of speed online for 9,000-16,000 surface feet per minute for abrasive cut-off wheels.

That info computes to roughly 1100-2000 R.P.M. for a 30 inch wheel.

I suppose the safest bet would be to look for speed data on the wheel label or contact the wheel manufacturer.

Are you working with what is commonly known as a "buzz saw"?

If so, looking at old literature, it seems 1200 RPM was commonly-suggested speed for a 30" blade. Some suggest a bit less.

"There once was a man from Chicago

who wanted to see a buzzsaw go.

So he put his face up close to the place.

Now folks ask "where did his jaw go"?"

Bob,I can certainly see how that could happen.Eric, its very old no name nor numbers.I was looking for tip speed, much help and thank you both.GP

Buzz saws cord wood saws, even saw mills run with a rim speed of between 10,000 to 12,000 feet per minute.

saw diameter in inches divided by 12. multiply answer times 3.14. divide the answer into the rim speed you want to get the shaft speed RPM.

In your case 30" saw with a rim speed of 12,000 feet per minute 1528.66242 RPM
In your case 30" saw with a rim speed of 11,000 feet per minute 1401.2738 RPM
In your case 30" saw with a rim speed of 10,000 feet per minute 1273.88535 RPM

the slower the saw spins the harder it is to hand feed the saw.
