Stover k 1 1/2 hp

Can some one tell me how to adjust the govenor on this engine or even if it needs adjusting. When it is running it will fire 3 to 4 times in arrow
and then it will turn several revolutions and then fire 3 to 4 times in a row again. Other engines I have only fire once and miss and fire again.
This engine has two weights on the flywheel and the springs seem to be too loose to me but I'm not sure how they are supposed to be. Any
help is very much appreciated. Here is the engine picture and the tags.

If you tighten the springs up it will run faster, so unless it is a little weak and it's running REALLY slow, I doubt if that's your problem. Your fuel mixture could be off a little one way or another, did you fool with it some when it's running to see if it clears up? Decent compression? Make sure your valve timing is right and also make sure the check valve in the fuel system is clean and working if it has one, and I think it does. I have a little older small Stover and it is awful picky. Does it blow any black smoke?

This one is real sensitive to fuel mixture, but rich or lean it still hits 3 or 4 time each time it hits. Only time you get black smoke is when it's too rich. I will keep tweaking it and clean the check valve and tank. Valve timing seems to be good, it don't spit back thru carb. I took the slack out of the govenor springs but didn't tighten them and it didn't change the speed that I could tell. Thanks for you help

Well, how about the ignition timing? There has to be something making it hit a little weak. As far as governor tech. goes, springs give fuel and weights take it away. The older Stovers were red or green, I have seen several newer ones like yours that were green or dark blue, so I really don't know.

I have a 2 1/2 hp stover on a 1/2 bag concrete

mixer. What you are describing is normal, the governor

keeps the engine speed within a range. When the rpm

gets to the low end of the range , it fires until it

gets to the upper end of the range.

Mine is dark green . In steady mixing , it will wear

two men a day and do it on about a gallon of gas.

What he is describing is normal for an engine with a load on it like a cement mixer, unloaded it should recover it's speed with one hit.
