Questions about maim oiler pipe?

My stationary engine came to me with no pipe for the main oilier. There is a plug inserted where the pipe is to be installed. I have purchased a used oilier from Ebay. What type of metal should the pipe be? Is the overall length of this critical? Pictures I have seen, puts the connection of the oilier just above the hopper. my guesstimate is 7 to 8 inches long. Is there any specs for this pipe? Engine is a 1 3/4 hp Economy.
Thanks

You want regular black iron pipe, and the oiler should be high enough to clear the water hopper, anything higher is just asking for trouble. Make sure the oiler you have is for an engine rather than a general machine oiler, an engine oiler will have a check valve.

Okay. Should the pipe be made of brass since it is immersed in water?
Here is a pic of my oilier. I will have to replace the cork gaskets, bottom one seeps some oil. I did rotate the pic, seems like it needs to be this way.
Thanks

It probably should be, and I will check but I'm about positive it was steel when it was new. The check valve will be in the threaded end of the sight glass, where you watch it drip. If it doesn't have it SOME of them will catch a little blow-by and allow it to blow into the oiler. As long as you are oiling some it's not a deal breaker but the oil in the reservoir will be all churned up and it will be about impossible to adjust the drip when it's running, if you need one you will know it.

I am not sure what this check valve should look like. When air was blew into the bottom of the oilier, the air was released by the clear window, moving upward, allowing the air to escape. Is that the check valve you are referring to?
Thanks
