Need advice on how to pick up a 3 1/2 McCormick Deering engine. Is it possible to use an engine host to load it into a pickup truck. From what I have read the engine weights around 650 lbs which makes it a bit of a worry since the pickup bed is kind of high. It is sitting on its original wooden cart which may help some. Is there a proper place to put a chain or sling around the engine or should I rent a small trailer. I live in NC and the engine is in PA. Thanks for any help and thanks for a great site.

An engine hoist will work just fine if it has enough height and reach (mine does-bought from an outfit like Princess Auto). Get some nylon straps to go under the main body of the engine (4'-6'). HTH

Thanks Bob, The engine just looks bigger than any car engine that I have put in the bed of my pick up, I guess I'm a little nervous about. Both of my grandfathers have owned the engine with my uncle having it last. He passed away last year and I was first in line to be able to purchase it from my aunt. I'm looking forward to cleaning it up and getting it running. Where would buy the nylon straps?

Thanks, l'm starting to feel better, I guess the first time is always the hardest, I made a mistake, it is a 3 hp not a 3 1/2. At my Aunt's there is a I beam with a chain fall that my uncle used for pulling motors so if I get a couple of nylon straps like Bob sugested at Northern I should be ok till I get back to NC. I can always take the tires off the truck if the engine crain won't go high enough, just kidding I hope.

How much does the 6 HP IHC weight and was it on a wooden cart. The one that I'm picking up is sitting on its original wooden cart. Should I unbolt the engine from the cart to reduce the height of the assembly or leave it together.
