BS Head gasket

Howdy. I have a (50's I think) Craftsman lawnmower (reel type) with a B&S 1.5 hp engine on it (I think). I can get it to fire with white gas, but not with real gas, so I'm gonna take the head off, do the valves and such, but don't have a source for a head gasket locally. The guy I relied on up and passed on. Help please. b

Find the model #, and GOOGLE it for a parts catalog, then search for the part # on ebay and Amazon.

Question: we always used white gas in our mower when I was a kid. I have not heard about it or seen it sold for some 50 years. I am curious what are you calling white gas and where are you buying it? Thanks - good luck on finding a gasket.

Sears 500 700139 = Briggs and Stratton 5S series.

You need a #291301 Cylinder Head Gasket (Replaces #27463, #67537.)

LOTS for sale on the 'net, ebay, etc..

The older part numbers are likely more durable, but likely contain asbestos.

I think that Coleman camp fuel is virtually the same as the old white gas.

Wikipedia seems to think so, but that source is not always absolute, either. From Wikipedia:

"Coleman fuel is a petroleum naphtha product marketed by The Coleman Company. Historically called white gas (not white spirit), it is a liquid petroleum fuel (100% light hydrotreated distillate) usually sold in one gallon cans.[1] It is used primarily for fueling lanterns and camp stoves. Additionally, it is a popular fuel for fire dancing. Originally, it was simply casing-head gas or drip gas which has similar properties. Drip gas was sold commercially at gas stations and hardware stores in North America until the early 1950s. The white gas sold today is a similar product but is produced at refineries with the benzene removed."

Thanks for the reply. That was pretty much my understanding. My first job was in the southern part of Illinios and the locals would talk about filling their cars (as kids) with dip leg gas from the various oil wells in the area.

I have a 8HP B&S in a lawn tractor that I use very little. I have been using Coleman fuel (add tolulene to prevent spark knock) in it for the past four years. The good part is the fuel does not go bad or require draining for storage.
