I AM HOPING SOMEONE OUT THERE CAN HELP ME WITH A PROBLEM I AM HAVING WITH A CONTINENTAL F 226 ENGINE INSTALLED IN A JAEGER AIR COMPRESSOR. I TRY TO KEEP IT RUNNING FOR A FREIND, BUT RECENTLY ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO SOLVE. IT RECENTLY BEGAN TO START STALLING AND ULTIMATELY STOPPING ESPECIALLY WHEN A LOAD IS PUT ON IT UNLESS THE CHOKE IS PULLED OUT ABOUT 3/4 OF THE WAY. WITH THE CHOKE APPLIED, IT WILL CONTINUE TO RUN, BUT POORLY. THE IGNITION IS FINE, AND I HAVE REMOVED AND CLEANED THE CARBURETOR. I HAVE ALSO CHECKED THE FUEL LINES AND FUEL PUMP AND FIND NO PROBLEM. FACT IS, I REALLY FOUND NOTHING OF NOTE IN THE CARBURETOR EXCEPT FOR A SMALL AMOUNT OF DIRT THAT I CLEANED OUT. I WAS CONVINCED IT WAS A FUEL DELIVERY PROBLEM, BUT HAVE NOW RULED THAT POSSIBILITY OUT. WHEN THE ENGINE BEGINS TO STALL, THE GOVERNOR ACTIVATES AND OPENS THE THROTTLE, BUT TRUTHFULLY, I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH GOVERNOR DIAGNOSIS. I AM COMING TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE PROBLEM HAS TO DO WITH THE GOVERNOR, BUT NOT HAVING DEALT WITH GOVERNORS MUCH, I AM RELUCTANT TO DIVE INTO IT. CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THIS SOUNDS LIKE A GOVERNOR PROBLEM OR IF I SHOULD BE LOOKING ELSEWHERE?
 
When the engine slows down and the governor arm moves the governor is telling the carburetor to send more fuel to the engine. Then there is no fuel to send. There are many versions of the F-226 engine. Does this engine have: an updraft or down draft carburetor? How about a fuel pump? You may need to make up a little test fixture to see what the fuel level in the carburetor is when the engine acts up.
 
IT HAS AN UPDRAFT CARBURETOR WITH A MECHANICAL FUEL PUMP. THE DIAPHRAM IN THE FUEL PUMP FAILED A FEW YEARS AGO AND AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP WAS PUT IN. I RAN THE FUEL PUMP INTO A CONTAINER AND GOT ABOUT A GALLON OF GAS IN ABOUT A MINUTES TIME SO I AM SATISFIED THAT THE FUEL PUMP AND LINES ARE OK. WHEN I CLEANED OUT THE CARBURETOR, I FOUND ABOUT A HALF CUP OF GAS IN THE BOWL. I THOUGHT THAT MIGHT BE A LITTLE LOW, BUT CONSIDERING THE SIZE OF THE FLOATS, I DECIDED IT WAS OK. WHAT'S PUZZLING ME IS THAT IT SEEMS TO BE GETTING ALL THE GAS IT WANTS TO THE CURBURETOR, BUT DOESN'T WANT TO RUN UNLESS THE CHOKE IS PULLED OUT.

PROBLEM SOLVED. ALTHOUGH I HAD PUT A NEW INLINE FUEL IN THIS COMPRESSOR LAST FALL, IT WAS DEFECTIVE. IT WOULD ALLOW GAS TO FLOW THROUGH, BUT APPARENTLY NOT ENOUGH. I REMOVED IT AND HOOKED THE ENGINE UP DIRECTLY, AND IT RAN JUST FINE. I'LL HAVE TO GET ANOTHER ONE TO PUT BACK IN, BUT AT LEAST IT IS NOW RUNNING LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO.

MORAL OF THE STORY: DON'T ASSUME YOUR BRAND NEW PARTS ARE DOING THE JOB EVERY TIME.
