I'm trying to get a Maytag 82 multi motor running as it should. I'm having trouble with the carb. My first question is should there be a check valve at the bottom of the fuel feed tube inside the gas tank? I know the 72 and 92 have them. Also what should the initial settings be for the fuel and air valves? I can make the engine run as it should, then it seems as if it starves for fuel and quits running. Thank you in advance for the help.

They can be touchy engines to run. The carb is very primitive and adjusting a sight bit makes a big difference. How they are set depends on how worn the main bearing is, how much compression, how hot the spark, etc.... kind of trial and error. On the one I used to have I opened the air cap 1/2 turn and the adjusting screw was open 3/4 turn.
