John Deere E 1 1/2 hp

I just got a 1944 JD E 1 1/2 engine. It has a pretty nice restoration on it, but the mag is a bit weak. the guy started it for me with a little jump box and then switched it to the mag and it ran fine. How do you make one of those jumper boxes? Also, he said the magnet on the mag was the weak spot and it needs recharged. How do you do that?

Any place that works on magnetos will have a magnet charger, the best ones charge it without removing the magnet from the magneto. If there are any shops around that rebuild starters and generators, these would be good places to check. Do you have a manual? The mag needs to be timed even though it just looks like a generator, on the JD's a strong mag can be out of time quite a ways but a weak one needs to be right on. To run your engine now you need a battery and a low-tension coil, and IF you run it this way the mag wire should be taken off the ignitor and grounded, NEVER feed current back towards the magneto. Fix your magneto.
