Tecumseh 16hp

Anyone on here that knows or has any info on the
Tecumseh--- OH 160 engines.

My questions are:
1: Is there any possibility that the impulse fuel pump can suck oil from the crankcase?

2: Can this pump be replaced with an electric pump?

Thanks
Keith

I've never heard of oil going through the fuel pump. Not very likely since the impulse signal is high above the oil level. If the pump were bad it would be more likely to put fuel in the oil, not oil in the fuel. They seldom give trouble.

Yes, you could put an electric on. It would need to be a low pressure model. MHO, I would not recommend it.

I am likely wrong (maybe not) but my understanding is that Tecumseh is defunct. Parts and info may be a problem. HTH. P.S. I have several of those engines and that is my info.

Yeppers on Tecumseh being defunct, they were bought out in 2007, the factory Rep told me this morn, that the company that bought them out, is out sourcing a lot of the parts for Tecumseh. So some items can be had. I ordered a service manual today.
Rep was going to check on availability of over size piston and rings. Standard piston and rings are NA.

Again thanks guys.

PS. I'm not going to anything to this engine until I get the service manual.

Keith, as you seem to have already discovered, many Tecumseh parts are NLA, but there are several small engine supply houses that still have some parts, as well as amazon and fleabay. If the engine seems to be "pumping oil" or smoking excessively you may want to check the valve guides and/or seals for wear. I commend you for purchasing a manual before digging to deep into the engine! A lot of people have really messed up by not doing so.

Thanks for the info.

I ordered a service manual from factory Rep. yesterday, AND I down loaded a complete service manual from Tecumseh website yesterday afternoon. And I already have the parts manual.

This motor is on a portable Miller welder I purchased Thur. Head was already removed, and I was told that it started smoking and had a lose of power is the reason they removed the head. No excessive wear on valve guides, very little ridge in top of cylinder. The only thing I see is that there is no seal for intake valve.. ALL parts are there for engine. Even has new gaskets with it. The only thing I see that is missing is 1 Belleville washer.

So I think what I am going to do is pour in 1/2 cup of Kroil on top of piston and let it sit a couple of days. OH, motor turns over, I just want to make sure rings are not stuck..

Thanks----------have a great day
