I had the stupidest thing happen this morning.
I fired up the old B&S i have on my power washer and 2 sec later a h "ll of a racket inside the cowling,..the flywheel had come loose(nut had backed off) i shut the thing down right away.
I took the air duct off and pulled the flywheel and inspected for damage to the ignition.I found none and put the flywheel and cowling back on. I could not get the thing to fire again, ..no spark!, all the wiring and points and such checks out, still no spark.
I have an other good magneto so i decided to put it on but i can't find any timing marks on either the coil assembly with the 3 slotted holes or on the magnet on the crank.

my question.
How do you time the ignition coil magneto assembly on an old cast iron series B & S.?

thanks

bison, it would probably help if you could supply the model number and the type number. I'm sure you checked the flywheel key, but even if it were partially sheared, there should be spark, just not at the right time. Does the coil assembly use two screws to mount to a plate with three slotted holes? If so, you probably have the Magnetron ignition. For gas engines, the book says center the screws in the mounting holes and tighten. You also have to set the air gap or clearance between the flywheel and coil laminations. All this is where the model and type number can be important. I did Google "Servicing the ignition on a Briggs and Stratton engine" and found some interesting information. You may like to check it out. I hope this may help a little.

You must have an old Magnematic ignition?

Do you know the engine model #? (You will need it for the timing procedure.)

Thanks Bob, that was exactly what i needed to verify that i've timed the coil correctly and exactly as per manual (unbeknown to me) yesterday.

Last night when cleaning the coil looking for a timing mark I happened to find the timing arrow on the coil assembly and I set the timing as i thought should be close to were it should be and the engine started and ran perfect.

Am i good or what!?
