Have k 301 kohler thats driving me up the wall.Its a flywheel mag.Put a new set of points and cond.set on .020.Nothing has been changed on that.Cleaned and rebuilt the carb.It will crank and half way run,loads up bad,carb adjustment don't help.Have another engine settig beside it that runs perfect,swap the carbs on them no difference in the running.You can take the plug out and ground it it seams to fire as it should. Need help bad;

The push rod for the breaker points wear on these engines and sometime fail to operate as they should and will alter the ignition timing.

A little more info helps diagnose. Did it run OK prior to replacing the points? Did you use Kohler points or aftermarket? Some of the aftermarket stuff is pretty bad. Check the hinge for stiffness and the spring against the old set. Tight hinge and/or weak spring does what your engine is doing. The point gap is set by spark timing, not gap. Even though a gap is listed it is not the way to set them. Check the timing and set as per the manual which is downloadable from the Kohler site. I have seen the gap be waaaay of from the suggested setting when the timing is right. Remove the kill wire so that circuit is out of the picture and check the primary wire all the way from the coil to the points.

After you put the points and condensor in the machine, did you also time the engine, the .020 is just a starting point on ignition timing, once you get points in it, take a timing light and adjust it.
