Wisconsin VH4D bench start

Hello all,

Here's the story , I bought an old 74 international skid loader 3200 B it has a Wisconsin VH4D gas engine with magneto type ignition. The machine belonged to a good friend that passed away and the during his sickness the tractor sat uncovered for 9 years. It was given to me and as a tribute to my old buddy I decided to restore it, at this point I pulled the engine and sent it off to a machine shop to break her down and put her back together which they did. It is basically a new engine 3000.00 for the rebuild, I have it ready for a test start which the shop didn't offer as part of there deal. I have gas going to the fuel pump, spark from all 4 plugs, compression from all 4 , it turns over but just doesn't sound like its even trying to start, the shop said there pretty sure the timing is correct but wouldn't it start if the timing was off or at least try to start? I keep trying different things, thanks to bob on here I now know a negative wire comes off the mag to serve as a kill switch but other then that I have a battery jumper hooked up positive going to starter and negative going to on of the tin covers. Like I said it turns over but that's it, it must be something I don't see any help with this would be greatly appreciated I thought about taking it somewhere but it's tough to find someone to pick up where the shop left off, thanks again for any help.

Take all the plugs out and turn it over by hand with a finger or thumb in a plug hole. Mag should snap at the end of each compression stroke. If it doesn't, change the wires until it does.

Tried the thumb over idea and I have compression at each cylinder , double checked timing, but have no spark from the magneto, I'm just going to get a new mag, points, rotor, condenser and that should be it?

Make sure points are set at .015 and disconnect the grounding wire from the magneto and check for spark. You may have to take light paper and clean up the points.

The rotor should be pointing to No1 in this picture if you have No1 piston TDC on the compression stroke. Hal

Bring No1 piston to tdc on the compression stroke.
If your mag is installed your rotor should be pointing to the No1 plug tower that's about 2 o'clock. Here's a pic. Hal

Thanks, I will print and use this, when I found or at least thought I found TDC once before I hold my thumb over the number 1 plug hole turn the enging over until I felt pressure like the book said but do I only do that until the X on the fan fin is center of the cover? That's what it say's to do but I only felt a little pressure on my finger? How do you know your at TDC at the most pressure point during the turning of the engine or just after the pressure reaches the most and then "click" ? And should I worry about where the X is on my fan fin? It says TDC of fan cover but I would amagine TDC of piston matters more? By the way Magneto is being rebuilt now so I'm down for a week or so.

I read you post wrong. ElToro is pointing you in the right direction.

The shop most likely timed the cam to the crankshaft correctly. As ELToro is pointing out the Magneto was not timed correctly to the engine. The page as I see it that Eltoro posted is hard to read. There is a Wisconsin web site you can go to and get the manual to correctly time the Magneto to the engine. That is what I feel is your problem.

If your Magneto had spark you did not need to have it repaired.

I accidently ran a hot wire to the mag and fried it for sure I had it tested. I found the manual and the timing should be set correctly when I get the mag back it should fire up.

I have a vh4d on my baler. I ALWAYS have to prime it with fuel to get it started. Always. Try that trick. There should be a little 1/4 inch plug in the manifold next to the exhaust that you can pour a little fuel into to get it going.
That works for me, Good luck

Walk in peace
