Pointy stick in oil filter

Got a old New Holland baler with a VH4D engine on it. Went to change the oil and filter and the filter (a mason jar thread type) had a stick up the middle. I looked at the new one and it had a stick in it too. Whats up with the pointy stick in the oil filter? I am assuming it is just to keep the opening in the middle while on the shelf. I AM supposed to take the stick out when I install it right? Cause the last fella left the stick in when he put it on. Help me understand please...

The filter base on the engine is supposed to have a tube extending from it which comes to a point with a restrictive, small hole in it.

You are supposed to pull the stick out of the new filter (which serves to keep the hole open in the filtering media during transport and storage) out and discard it and drop the filter down over the hole tube and down onto the base.

Often times, the steel tube becomes detached from the filter base and remains in an old filter and gets tosses, as it seems your"s has.

WITHOUT the tube you are filtering NO oil and the oil pressure is less "cuz the restriction provided be the small hole in the end of the tube is gone!

Here"s a couple of photos of (similar) Allis filter bases, one with the elusive tube and the other missing it"s tube.

Bob is correct...your tube is missing, and
where are you going to find one? Sometimes the
whole filter mount, as shown in photos, is on
E-bay, under category, "Wisconsin Engine Parts"
or, look for an Allis Chalmers one in a bone
yard..they use the same filter element.

An older Oliver used the same set up. They had a kit, the parts are still available or were last year. You also need to find out if a restrictor disk is used with that set up. J.
