Wisconsin engine question's

I think the answer is no but want to make sure.
Will the distributor from a VG4 work in a VH4.
Will the distributor from a VH4 work in a VE4. I
had heard the VH is even fire and VE is odd fire so
I would think that would make a difference????

In the manual it says a VG magneto will not work
on a VP. I put a VG magneto on a crank start VP It
started on two cylinders and by moving spark plug
wires I was able to get it to hit on all four.

I pulled the heads off a VG4 today because the
spark plugs did not want to come out without extreme
force. I have those upside down now soaking with
liquid wrench.

When I took the heads off I noticed that on a
couple of head bolt holes under the exhaust
manifold the the top half inch of threads were
gone. These bolts came out with ease so that did
not happen when I removed the head. Any ideas on
how that could have happened?

I can only answer a little bit.
VH4 dist (even fire ) will not work on VE4 or VF4 (odd fire). It will run on #1 and 3 cyl. No 2 and 4 cyl will fire way late.

That solves part of it. Do you think it would work if you switched #2 and #4 wire at the distributor? Or is the Cam and Crankshaft configured differently to give it the even and odd fire?

What you have in odd fire is a inline 4 crank shaft in a V 4. So when it fires 1 then 3 on left bank and moves over to right bank # 4 you have an extra 90 crank shaft degrees or 270 degrees total since # 3 fired. #2 fires in 180 degrees but when going back to fire # 1 you only have 90 degrees.
The cam would have to ground to reflect the odd fire configuration. Now if you could get a full speed distributor to work would take some drawing of diagrams and thinking for me.

Sounds way over my head. It would be a lot easier on my head just to run what works.

I am thinking now that if the VG4 is even fire the VH4 distributor will work on it. The piece the distributor bolts into would have to have the same gear as the other engine and the idler gear would have to be the same also. That even confused me.If the idler gear turned the same distance per revolution I would say the housing or generator that the distributor fits into would work on either engine. If I am wrong let me know. I have been wrong before.

This might help, not certain if all VG4 were even fire. All I ever worked on Were VE4,VF4 VH4.
If you have a distributor drive it should be 1/2 speed . I revolution of rotor for 2 revolutions of crankshaft. WI magneto’s were most or all full speed. One revolution of MAG for 1 revolution of crankshaft.

I read your smokstak thread and am still confused, except for the part where it says you can not interchange a half speed distributor with a full speed distributor. I would think if you changed what ever is in between the distributor and the idler gear at the same time the distributor would work????

I am trying to modernize a 1965 vintage VG4 to electric start. The parts I am planning on using are coming off an older VG4. The older VG4 has the 3 inch round holes in the sheet metal at the back of the engine so you can clean out schaf from around the cylinders. That is why I think it is older.

If you have an 'crankshaft speed' distributor, it could work on an odd fire (ve/vf) engine. The magneto setup for odd fires was like that.
'Half speed' distributors were not interchangeable between even fire and odd fire.

were only half speed distributors on the back of generators. Or were they mounted on a piece that had a pulley for a generator?
