Mccormick Deering LA

Just traded for my first engine. An LA. Having some trouble with it and I am clueless. Trying to start this engine and I can crank and crank on it. It will backfire and run backwards a couple of times. I can eventually get it to start after some fighting. Then it seems to me it really hits hard when it fires. I think it should be a little smoother when running. Could be wrong? Anyone experience this before?

One thing you want to check is how it is timed. There will be a mark on the rim of the flywheel, on the outside face of the rim. Roll the engine over slowly and see when the mag snaps, the impulse for starting at low rpm. The mark on the flywheel should line up with the mark on the cover behind the flywheel. Should be @ 12:00 position. If it is not in this location whel rolling the engine over slowly the mag is out of time. If it is in time then check the valve clearances and the fuel pick up tube. That is, as long as you have good strong spark. The fuel mixer is very finiky on these engines. Just a 1/4 turn one way or the other will either flood the engine or not be enough fuel. They are good runners once things are set right.

It does sound like a timing issue. follow Kelly B's instructions for timing. If it is firing and trying to run backwards it is not an issue of not having enough spark. I have 3 of these engines. I was trying to start one at a show one time and was not having much luck. Guy walks up to me and said his Daddy told him that was the only engine he ever saw that there was nothing wrong with but you couldn't get them to run. I believe him. i started an LA last week that had not been run since Sept. Started first crank. Book says 3/4 turn out on the needle.
