Hello all. I am new to hit and miss. I have a JD 1 1/2 model E. it is running on a fairbanks morris mag and spark plug instead of igniter set up, it runs fine but it closes the exhaust valve 3 times every time it fires . it then holds the valve open just fine till its time to fire again then close ,close ,fire. I think it should just close the valve once Any thoughts. Thanks Merv

NOT sure how you are driving the Fairbanks mag, but I"m GUESSING it"s a 4 cylinder version and only the spark for one cylinder is getting to the spark plug. Or, if a single-cylinder mag, the gear ratio between the mag and the camshaft is wrong.
Spark SHOULD get to the plug EVERY time the crank turns ABOUT 180° from the time the exhaust valve closes. The exhaust valve will close every 720° crankshaft degrees ASSUMING the engine is NOT above governed speed, so the governor is latching up the valve pushrod. As it is now, sounds like you have spark at the plug, then engine turns though 3 compression cycles (2160°), then the spark plug "fires" again.

I would say you need to fool with the mixture a little, maybe try just a little richer. Most of the E's I've had like to have the choke closed around half-way. The brass needle jet in the mixer should be in a certain position but I can't remember where it is, there is an index mark ground into one end of it. If your check valve on the tank end of the fuel line isn't holding the fuel up it will act just as you describe also.

Rich up the fuel some. Make sure the gas tank is full. I have one that runs like that when the gas tank is low on fuel. I think that has to do with the check valve. my engine runs pretty wet if you look in the carb. choke should be completely open when engine is tuned right. As posted above the seat for the carb needle has to be in with the holes straight down.
