Briggs Stratton lawn mower engine

I'm trying to revive an old B&S lawn mower engine and I can't get any compression. What should be the valve clearance? Also I noticed that the exhaust valve open briefly as the piston is coming up on compression stroke. Any help would be appreciated Thanks, doorman

I think the intake should be 6-8 and the exhaust 10 -12. The intake valve should be slightly as the piston comes up on the compression stroke. This is where the Easy Spin for starting is built into the engine. This causes you to feel no compression if you spin the engine slowly. At normal operating speed the Easy Spin is not a factor. actually holds the valve off the seat about 1/200th of a second.
