My Father gave me a grist mill that is a 1904 model which he had refurbished and had a 5 hp electric motor installed so he could do demonstrations for local schools and fairs. Part of the deal in accepting this mill was to carry on the demonstrations. With that said I would like to get a hit and miss engine to power the mill. I have no expeience with hit and miss engines. Any suggestions as what kind of engine to look for and how expensive they are? |

I have Maytag hit & miss engines. They are about 1 hp. Let us know what size mill you have. I have seen small grist mills powered with these engines.

If your grist mill needed a 5 HP electric motor. I believe it would need at least a 5 or 6 HP gas engine. I'm only guessing at a cost for a hit-miss engine that size maybe $1200.00 to $1500.00. When on our farm, we needed to run a grist mill to grind feed, we used the belt power from a Farmall H. Not sure of the size of your mill.

I saw the power requirements for a saw mill once. 100 horse gas or diesel or 75 horse electric. If that is correct you would need a little more gas horse power, maybe 25%.

A tractor is a option, I have a case vac i hope to have running soon but i will have to get a belt pulley for it and an it would be an extra trip to haul the tractor. A hit and miss could be mounted on the trailer and I could pull it with the pickup in one trip. I will have to check hp requirements for the mill then I will know more what to look for. Thanks for the input
