I have a VH4D that I want to rebuild. I have a manual for the VE4, VF4, will that manual work for the VH4? I know the VH4 has rod bearing inserts where as the other two have poured rod bearings. They are basically the same engine, any suggestions? Is there a site where you can look up a serial number and find out the year of manufacture? This number is 5950053, I am guessing maybe 70's or 80's.Is this engine the 25 or 30 horse version?

Google 'wisconsin serial number lookup'. The engine was built in march 1980. It is 30hp. VH4D is approximately the same as earlier versions except that the big difference is the crankshaft -- vh4d is even-firing design.

Thanks Tramway, I have it apart now with the help of the VF4D manual. Two of the pistons have a lot of wear above the top compression ring. I am hoping or guessing that it was caused by not cutting the ridge out of the cylinder? Or else the piston skirts were too short?
