Cold Start Engine

We have a small green engine in our barn that looks similar to a small generator. I was told by my father that it was a cold start engine used for starting diesel engins. Any additional information would be great. Also we may be interested in selling it. Thanks!

It could be a V4 john deere motor used to start the 70 through 830 john deere diesel farm tractors, as well as the 840 industrial jobs.

I finally got some pictures. I can email more

So, what information is stamped on the tag of your Briggs and Stratton-powered generator?

The engine is a Briggs and Stratton. It has a small Flo-Jet with four bowl screws. This tells me that the engine is likely a 80000 series/3 HP. If it is a 120 VAC 60 HZ generator which is likely because of the twist lock plug, the generator will have a output of around 1250 Watts/10 amp. This is not a lot of power but if the power is out because of storm damage, 1250 Watts is better than NO watts. Clean the fuel system, change the oil, and pull the flywheel so the points that are behind the flywheel can be cleaned. The engine will run. You might need to flash the generator to get power as sometime during long idle periods, a generator will loose it's residual magnetism.

Check closely as you may have both a commutator and slip rings on the rotor because you need to generate a D.C. voltage for the field to produce a AC voltage.

The DC voltage is the only rating on the tag. In order for it to be used as a cold start engine it would have to create DC voltage.

Please define "cold start engine". I'm NOT familiar with the term and, it seems, GOOGLE isn't either.
