Rod and main clearance on Stover CT-2

Dad said he read the manual and couldn't find anything about how tight to set the rod or main bearings. We set them so there was a slight drag, but not extreme. Is there anything more to it than that?

I forgot to ask if anybody had any good leads on a gas tank fill. Hopefully that is the last part we will need.

(quoted from post at 16:41:26 08/20/11) Hi Scott:
Hit & Miss carries fuel tanks for the CT-2.

Kelvin

Dad just bought the tank from them, but we are pretty sick of waiting on them. Every time you order it is 4 weeks or more until you get the part. I understand that they make a lot of the parts on demand, but I just want to get this thing running. :D Dad thought the tank would come complete with the fill and cap, but I guess you need to purchase it all separate. It made total sense that it didn't come complete when I looked at the price of just the fill. $48!?! I think we are going to use a pipe plug and a funnel for the first little bit until we find the part at a swap meet.

We were just talking about you today. Dad was wondering if we should call you for help firing up the engine. Who knows if we did everything right and we thought you might help us get the engine running. I'm not sure how good you are at trouble shooting these engines, but just about anybody has been around them more than Dad and I.

Dad is gone fishing all next week so there won't be much progress. I told him we should hurry up and finish so we could take it to Rock River Thresheree since they are featuring Economy this year.

(quoted from post at 18:39:45 08/20/11) If you set them for "Slight Drag", better make
sure that they're getting enough lube!

So there should be no resistance? I would compare their tension to a wheel bearing. I tightened them up until there was quite a bit of drag and then backed it off a notch.

The rod bearings are really touchy because there is no way to measure them (that I can think of) Can't you use plastigauge on the crank since it is a shimmed bearing and you are tightening the bolts down all the way?

Shouldn't have much drag at all, if you can tighten it and gain any drag you do not have enough shim, the cap should bear against the rod, not the journal.

Forgot to add, I you are not thrilled with Hit n Miss Ent. check out Starbolt, I would rather deal with them anyday.

That is true with Hit&Miss you usually wait. With never have had the engine running I'd try cranking it by hand first and see if you get any pop out of it. It not then I'd belt it up to one of the tractors PTO and let the tractor do the work while you adjust. Low idle on the tractor and be careful of the belt. Like the other said make sure you have the rod shimmed right before you try starting it. Squirt a little oil in the cylinder before you try starting it also.
