Fairbanks Morse Engine won't stay running

I have a FB motor that was running fine the first of last year. I went to crank it the other day and it would hit once or twice and then die. It"s getting fuel to the carb and today messing with it it would now and then hit and act like it wanted to run but would die after 30 secs or so.

It"s got good spark at the plug and might have flooded it as there was gas coming out of the diaphagm. However the plug never got wet.

took the carb off and cleaned it real good.
Any suggestions?

That sorta sounds like a bad or weak coil, they will spark then stop and given a chance to rest will spark when you test it. When it has to spark constantly they quit.

OK I'll look at that. If that is it I should be able to take a spark tester and just keep turning the crank and see if it stops sparking...

Thanks!

I'd try another spark plug first. It may sound funny, but sometimes a plug will seem to fire okay out of the engine, and not fire well when it is in the engine, and under compression. BTDT.

When one of those engines that has been running starts to act up, check the plug, clean the points in the magneto, check all of the electrical connections, and make sure that the check valve in the fuel line isn't stuck. That will usually get you going.
