I have an older 4500 watt Coleman generator. Need some advice on how to adjust the speed as the voltage output is dependent on engine speed. Also does this type of generator normally run at the max listed speed 3600rpm even at no load? It appears to do that and then if a heavy load is applied and it starts to slow it down the governor speeds it back up. This is my spare unit as I bought a new one because this one over sped after the carb was cleaned and took out a pump. I now have a 8000 watt model with regulated voltage and electric start.

I set mine with a volt meter, to 130V no load. There is a speed screw, kinda behind the carb. If your carb has been off your gov needs to be set the linkage between the gov and carb needs to be adjusted to a will fit, wide open. then adjust your no load voltage to not over 130V 128V. Then it should run about 122 or so under load.
 
You need a frequency meter to set the engine RPM on a 60HZ A.C. Generator. You need to set it at about 62 HZ No-Load. The best and easiest to use is a Kill-A-Watt meter. It measures Voltage, Amps, Frequency, Watts and Kilowatt/Hours. You can get one from MCMelectronics(dot)com 1-800-543-4330 for $22.99 Catalog number A012E, Item Number 28-10985.
