Hoping this is not a stupid question. How reliable are these mags? If you needed one and could buy one at auction is it likely to be working or do they "go bad". Are they expensive to repair. I ask because I am going to work on an engine that needs one and wanted to assess cost. Tractors seem to frequently have issues with gennys and alternators and was wondering if these mags were similar on the old engines?

Wico EKs are pretty reliable. They do sometimes need work, but there are several people who will redo them for the public. Unless they have a lot of wear, replacing the points & condensor, and adjusting them, will often get them going again. Sometimes the magnets will need recharging. There sure are a lot of them still in use, on old engines.

Thanks Tinker! I see them around for varying amounts and really have no idea what I am getting into. Just thought I would like to add a SE to the collection here so I can understand a little about how they work. Love to look at them at the shows. Seems like most I find are missing their mags!

"Most are missing their mags". EXACTLY. The mags are becoming valuable, and people will sell the mags by themselves, and then sell the rest of the engine. They make more money that way.
