REO gas engine

I picked up a REO single cylinder engine . The model number is 552-A . Haven't been able to get it started as yet . Cute little engine . Doesn't seem like it has much compression , could that be because of the small piston displacement ? Can anyone tell me the H.P. and what application it may have been used for . Thanks Brian

Poor compression could be caused by a worn out engine, or stuck valves, or valves not seating properly. Or maybe, just a dry cylinder. Pull out the spark plug, and squirt a little oil in the cylinder. Put the plug back in, and turn the engine over. See if that helps. If it doesn't, you may need to pull the engine apart, and see what sort of shape it's in.

Those little Reo engines are a lot of fun but they only put out about a horse and a half. You'll notice the power take off is from the camshaft and not the crankshaft end so it is a built in 2:1 gear reduction. Primarily used on reel mowers they were used for lots of things from washing machines to inboard boat propulsion. Most of the applications were from the factory although production numbers must have been very low for some of the accessories.
