32V Delco Power Plant

Hi,
I have a chance to buy four of these 32 volt Delco power plants, they are in very tough shape and the guy said you could probably get one running with all the parts? He wants me to make an offer, would any of you out there have any idea on what to offer?

Thank you,

Fred

There's a WIDE variation in models and worth of the various Delco 32 Volt units. Better post a model # (which someone may recognize) or a photo!

Hi Bob,
Your right on the photo, the one that was on cragislist didn t show much and I never heard back from the fellow selling them, I asked for more information.
I hear they are very heavy and that most don t have much of a value. I thought it would be fun to tinker with but now I have some Engines that I received that need my attention.

Thank you,

Fred

I just got one. It was just sitting out side and the guy wanted to get it gone so I picked it up for free. I talked with Dr. Delco, to get a manual for it. The value is just your pride really you probaly wont get much money for it because there not many people interested in them. Thats the understanding I have.

Pictures of it would be neat to see. This is the one I have.

Its even more cool when you start to read about it. Just got a manual for it today, gonna be my new readin material for a while I do belive

Thanks for the picture, the picture the fellow sent me of his are no where near as nice as yours, his are in a heap on the ground. I see his ad is no longer on cragislist so maybe someone bought them or he gave them away, either way my Wife is happy they are gone. :)
Thank you everyone for the replys,

Fred

My family had a 32 volt Delco generator which charged a bank of glass cased batteries.

We used the 32 volt system until I was about 6 years old. It was then and only then that REA agree to bring power to us.

We had 32 volt lights, an electric iron, an electric mixer, a Twin-tub Dexter wringer washer, a radio, and even Christmas lights. Probably a few other things that I've forgotten too.

The old radio was stored overhead in our garage for decades and we sold it at our parents estate sale in 1996. If there was a buyer/bid no one hauled it off so I brought it home with me and still have it. Unfortunately it has some broken tubes from birds building nest in it while overhead.

As I recall the Delco would be run while mom did laundry on Monday and recharge the batteries from weekend use. Later in the week she would iron and it would be run again which would also recharge the batteries getting them ready for weekend use.

Our conversion to REA was very costly. The mixer motor as well as the washing machine motor were sent off and rewound to accommodate the different voltage.

Plaster and lath in most rooms was removed, the house rewired properly and then sheetrock was installed and finished.

Many appliances were changed out. The Servel refrigerator was replaced with an electric, the cookstove was eventually replaced with a Crosley electric, etc.

Costly but oh so convenient and cheaper in the long run. Grid electricity really is cheap energy and so very useful.

Enjoy your 32 volt Delco.
