Maytag engines?

I've been toying with the idea of getting a hit and miss for a while. I really don't know much about them but I thought one of those old Maytag's might be a good place to start. I might be able to justify it by using it on my grinder during deer season  Does anyone have any suggestions, advice and an idea of what they might cost? I'm a pretty fair tinkerer so I don't mind fooling around with something a little. Sometimes that's half the fun.

The model 92,single cylinder Maytag engine is hit n miss, there are quite a few around, parts are easy to come by and they are simple to work on.They are a 2 stroke engine so you need to mix gas and oil.The best bet for a first engine, unless you are pretty mechanical,is to buy one that is running, the worst part about restoring them is that the parts are mostly cast iron and are very brittle,if you buy a cheap one that needs to be torn apart, you'll probably end up with a few broken pieces that need replacing and the most common parts that break can end up costing quite a bit.

The Maytag single cylinder I had DID NOT have a throttle plate in the carb. There was a govener I think that worked in the magneto. This was abut 50 years ago so I may be wrong about the govener but I do know NO THROTTLE PLATE.

Just to spread some light on the value of these things I have a Maytag model 92 mounted on a cart and attached to a horsehead muffler. The speed is governed by a conterweight that controls ignition firing. It is complete and running and I figure that in todays market it is worth about $100 even though I spent more on the base motor and all the additional parts to make it run. Don't pay anything more for ones that are not running and need parts.

I also have a Wards Satley hit and miss 1-1/2 H.P. that is restored and running on a cart and it is worth about $275.

Once the Satley was running I wanted to find a use for it so I bought a pump jack and pump to connect it too. I haven't put that all together because of lack of space around here.

I didn't realize that the Maytags were two stroke. I guess that's not a big deal but I much prefer four strokes.
