YT just had the second largest outage it's had in it's time. Century Link lost a fiber cable and our entire county was out of communications from this morning until a few minutes ago. The way I understand it, something to do with a truck somehow slicing the fiber cable. How that could happen I don't know. What's surprising is that such a major outage could occur after the last 11 years of preparation for redundancy, you wouldn't think that one cable could take out an entire county.
YT servers have been idling all day only able to talk to the computers in the warehouse, they haven't been down, but no one could get to them. I'll be checking everything over to make sure that there were no casualties from their inactivity (the software equivalent of a "shelf life"). So far so good.
Thanks and sorry for the long outage,
Chris |

| | The dump truck still had his bed up when he passed under the cable. The cable was just "nicked" but it contains many circuits. Last I heard there were 140 to be spliced. Joe |

| Would not have wanted to be that driver if he got caught. I do not know how it is today but back when I was driving dump truck if you did something like that it could cost you a lot plus even loose the right to drive |

| Thanks again for the update, not your fault. When something like this happens, the user, such as me starts to wonder if something happened with my phone, so I double checked with the computer, and no site, that's when I figured ytmag had a problem. Thanks again for keeping up a great site. |

| | The saving grace for people around here was cell phones. Plus the farm has satellite which also stays up in localized problems. We would do a back up like that for YT, but it would be way too slow. Same with Cellular internet. When I first contacted Century Link, they had no idea anything was wrong in this county. Makes sense since the vast majority of the county has Century Link and couldn't call them ;). |

| Century Link is as bad as Verizon. Had them out several times over the last few years to check for line noise causing problems with my computer. Always tell me "thar ain't nuttin wrong". Well, if there isn't any line noise, what is all that static on the line when I try to use the telephone? |
