The safe mail link is just to open the conversation with the other party. Once you've made contact, they have your real address and the conversation continues just through your mail (nothing to do with YT). Then of course attachments will work fine.
We don't allow links because it's out an "out in the open" contact. Spam bots can use it to contact everyone who posts. If links are allowed, it is far more attractive to them to do so, in fact it would be a dream come true for spammers. The way it is, it's only useful for real people who want to contact the other party.
