It does make a difference if you use modern view. Classic replies still don't generate notifications to modern view users. A couple of months ago, I started the project to get that working. I got as far as making email responses work from classic to modern view users, but still didn't get the notifications going.
You should get notifications for replies that are done on modern view. If that isn't working either, double check your email address in the profile. If you set notifications on this thread, you should get one since I use modern nearly exclusively. But, most users still use classic view so it will be more often than not, that you won't get notifications.
