i have a 77 or 78 Ford Backhoe and Loader. Not sure about year. i am having problems with the rearend leaking between rear transmission and differential housing..transmission hydrualic fluid coming out in area of starter..what could be the problem..also when i put in gear and shift forward or back it hesitates before moving, after its been sitting for a couple of days. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

when i run backhoe for awhile fluid leaks from around the transmission. i can check the fluid when its hot and it reads low. When i check it when its cold it reads to full.

Shopped for a backhoe last year- always heard bad things about the 550 Ford because of torque converter problems. Bought a 1970 all-gear drive and it's been good. Other recommendation was to get a real recent one- out of my $ limit or need. I would suspect a bad torque converter with the sluggish starts, bad seals and gaskets with the other problems.

Every one they ever built is at least 27 years old. If they were that bad, they would all be in boneyards by now. Oil seals are wear items when service life is counted in decades. Buying a machine of any color that age is a crapshoot.
